History
With roots dating back to the 19th century, Helweg Funeral Service is the oldest family owned and operated business in Jenkintown. Originating as a cabinet business owned by the Nice family, it has been serving the community since John Quincy Adams was president.
The Helweg family was introduced to the business when Harry Helweg, Sr. started working there in the 1820s or 1830s. In those days cabinet businesses built many things, including coffins, and many eventually became funeral homes.
In 1905 the Nice family sold the business to Harry and the funeral home has remained in the Helweg family ever since. The current owner, Bonnie Helweg, took over after the death of her husband in 1985. Her husband, Joseph Helweg, Jr., was Harry’s great-grandson.
Bonnie married Joe when he and his father, Joseph, Sr., were running the funeral home, then known as Helweg & Son Funeral Directors. In 1984 Joe changed the name to Helweg Funeral Service to stress their commitment to service. Today Bonnie continues to serve the community with the compassion and emphasis on service that the Helweg family has always held dear.
